Counter-relief (CCS Bard 2011)

2011
, 32 min

Counter-relief (CCS Bard) 2011 seeks to reveal that choreographic action and its intentions are always provisional, always created (whether before or after the fact) by the artistic process that represents it.”

– Kelly Kivland, Curator

Jimmy Robert and Maria Hassabi received a collaborative commission from Bard College, curated by Kelly Kivland, to create the third iteration of Jimmy Robert’s Counter-relief. Counter-relief (CCS Bard) 2011 is a  performance and installation that inverts choreographic thinking to dissolve the distinction between the process and production of image-making. Jimmy Robert’s previous Counter-relief iterations were presented at the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art in May 2008, and at the Kunsthalle Bern in March 2009.

An extended theatrical iteration of their collaborative work, with new title Counter-relief (Kaai) 2013 and a 60 min duration, was presented at Kaaitheater in 2013, curated by Katleen Van Langendonck.
